Who we are

We are a centre which provides assessment and advice on driving, car adaptation and car choice for disabled drivers and passengers.

What we do

We work in partnership with the Department for Transport (DfT), Motability Foundation and the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

We carry out assessments and give advice on driving, driving tuition and car adaptation. There are three types of driving assessment that we provide:

  • driving ability assessment
  • advice on adaptations
  • drive from wheelchair

Please contact the service for information regarding the fee structure for driving assessments.

How do you use this service?

To ascertain whether an individual is safe to learn to drive or continue to drive we accept referrals from:

  • the DVLA
  • Motability Foundation
  • health and social care professionals (if you have a medical condition)
  • non-medical self-referrals (will incur a charge – please contact us for further details).

You can contact South East Drive Ability by phone, email, in person or by letter. Once we have some basic personal information i.e. name, address, contact number, date of birth, reason for assessment and diagnosis, we are then in a position to determine the type of assessment you require and who should conduct the assessment.

We will make an appointment and issue the relevant paperwork to you. There will be a questionnaire for completion, which you can complete and return yourself or a third party may do this on your behalf.

We are proud to be part of Driving Mobility

Our independent assessment services are accredited by the national charity Driving Mobility.

Driving Mobility is the umbrella body which oversees 20 member centres across the UK – some of which are wholly charitable organisations whilst others operate within the NHS. Driving Mobility ensures that there are common standards, promotes good practice and offers training and education to all regional centres, whilst working closely with associated national organisations. These include the Department for Transport, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, Driver and Vehicle Agency (NI), Motability Foundation and the police, along with many other valued partners.

Driving Mobility is privileged to have Baroness Thomas of Winchester as their patron, and is supported by HM Government.

I thought the service was excellent, from being met at the station and taken to the centre. Everything was explained to me, as to what was going to happen. The driving instructors were excellent and I was constantly put at ease.

I was put at ease, everything was explained clearly. The whole process felt a safe and relaxed environment.
