Training to support nursing and care staff with information regarding the function of the bowel, causes of bowel dysfunction, risk assessments for bowel care, assessment of bowel function and theory of digital rectal examination and digital removal of faeces, including the management of Autonomic Dysreflexia in bowel care.

Please review the pre-course reading as directed before completing the e-learning. (This will take approximately 1 hour for the pre-course reading and up to 2 hours for the e-learning).  Practical skills would need to be assessed in the workplace and competencies signed off before clinicians practice unsupervised.

E-learning training package to support nursing and care staff with resources to support an understanding of the function of the bowel, causes of bowel dysfunction, risk assessments for bowel care, assessment of bowel function and theory of practical procedures such as digital rectal examination and digital removal of faeces, including the management of Autonomic Dysreflexia in bowel care.

Staff will need to review the pre-course reading as directed before completing the e-learning package.  Practical skills would need to be assessed in the workplace and competencies signed off before clinicians practice unsupervised.  This will be completed by a clinician with the appropriate skills and competencies

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Differentiate between bowel problems such as faecal incontinence, constipation, diarrhoea, incomplete/obstructed defecation, and establish assessment, treatment and management options for these.
  • Refer patients to other professionals appropriately.
  • Demonstrate an increased awareness of trans anal irrigation.
  • Promote the appropriate use of laxatives.
  • Perform digital rectal examination, administer suppositories and enemas and manually remove of faeces, after a practical assessment has been completed.
