What is the vulva?
The external parts of the female genitals including the clitoris, urethral opening (meatus), the labia (majora and minora), the vaginal opening (introitus) and the perineum.
Vulva care advice
Washing and bathing
- The vagina is self cleaning so it’s best not to over-wash the area as this may cause more irritation.
- Avoid using creams which have not been prescribed or recommended by a healthcare professional.
- Do not use soaps, deodorants, bubble baths or vaginal wipes in or around the vulval region.
- Wash the area once daily with water or an emollient (aqueous cream/Aveeno/double base/oilatum). Preferably showering rather than bathing. Avoid scrubbing with flannels or brushes.
- When washing your hair, avoid the shampoo coming into contact with the vulval area – try washing your hair over the bath instead.
Feminine hygiene
- Opt for unscented, unbleached sanitary products such as tampons, sanitary towels and pantyliners.
- Cloth menstrual pads and washable underwear are a reusable alternative to conventional sanitary towels and many are made of natural materials.
Clothing
- Wear loose fitting cotton underwear.
- Try washing underwear with non-biological detergents or plain water. Fabric conditioner contains potential irritants to the skin.
Sex
- A natural vaginal lubricant may help to ease discomfort, for example Yes or Sylk. If sex is still painful with a lubricant then using a local anaesthetic such as lidocaine before intercourse may help. Speak to your GP or a pharmacist about this.
- Topical oestrogen creams may help post-menopausal women to boost oestrogen levels.
Exercise
- If swimming or exercising vigorously, protect the vulval area with a barrier cream or petroleum jelly.
