A guide for patients having a vascular assessment
What is an Ankle Brachial Pulse Index (ABPI)?
An ABPI is a quick and simple test to see if the blood vessels in your legs are blocked. The blood pressure in both of your arms and lower legs will be taken and the ratio between the two will tell us if there is a blockage.
Why do I need an ABPI?
This test is carried out if the podiatrist suspects you have poor circulation.
Where is the test done?
It is carried out at your local podiatry clinic.
What will happen next?
If the problem is mild we will provide advice about lifestyle changes that may help in improving your circulation. If the problem is more severe we may refer you to see a vascular specialist for further assessment.
Are there any risks?
There are no risks associated with this test.

If you have any queries please contact the clinic where the ABPI was carried out.
