Frequently asked questions: Tests and exams
Last edited: 27/03/2025
During clinical appointments the medical team are frequently asked questions in relation to education.
- What reasonable adjustments can be made for my child to take the Key Stage 2 SATS?
- What reasonable adjustments can be made for my child to sit the Kent Test?
- What reasonable adjustments can be made for my child to sit their GCSEs?
For all educational questions, speaking to your child’s class teacher or SENCO would be your first port of call.
Reasonable adjustments for tests and exams can be made in line with the provision that is provided for your child on a daily basis at school. For example, if your child has additional processing time for tasks and activities and the school has evidence of this way of working, then extra time can be applied for.
Key Stage 2 SATS (non-mandatory)
- The Government provides guidance to local authorities and schools in relation to statutory testing. SATS are test that children in Year 6 will sit.
- 2025 key stage 2 access arrangements guidance.
Kent Test
If your child has special educational needs (SEN) or a disability which will affect their access to testing, you need to discuss this with their primary school's special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) before you register them for the test.
The school will need to apply for any necessary access arrangements. The online registration form asks you to confirm that you have discussed a request for access arrangements with your child’s school.
GCSEs
- According to the Joint Council for Qualification: ‘access arrangements are pre-examination adjustments for candidates based on evidence of need and normal way of working’.
- Schools can apply for 25 per cent extra time in GCSE exams by applying for access arrangements and usually the SENCO and/or the specialist assessor working in the school will process the applications online.
- Access arrangements for GCSE, AS and A level: 2023 to 2024 academic year.
