Information about carbohydrate awareness groups for adults with type 1 diabetes.
What is a carbohydrate awareness group?
The group session can help you develop key skills in identifying and counting the carbohydrate content in all food and drinks. This knowledge is the first step in learning to improve blood glucose control.
It can also be useful for those who have previously done carbohydrate counting but would like to refresh their skills and knowledge.
How long does the session last?
Each group session lasts for three hours. We will confirm how to access the course or the course location with you. You may need to take time off work or organise child care to attend the course. Most employers understand and we can provide a letter to support your attendance, if needed.
How many people attend each session?
Up to 10 people are invited to attend each session. Sessions are relaxed and informal.
What will the session cover?
- Carbohydrate awareness, including learning to recognise where carbohydrate is found in the food and drink you consume.
- Carbohydrate counting, including learning how to estimate carbohydrate content of meals and snacks in our practical workshop.
- Understanding how alcohol can affect blood glucose levels.
- Physical activity and methods to prevent highs and lows, pre and post exercise.
- How to recognise hypoglycaemia and recommended treatment.
- Your questions and answers.
How do I get a place on the session?
If you would like to attend one of these group sessions, please speak to your diabetes specialist nurse or dietitian. An invitation letter will be sent, asking you to ring and book a session on a suitable time and date.
Who are these sessions for?
Adults – aged 18 years and over with type 1 diabetes – who would like to learn more about carbohydrate counting, including those with a new diagnosis or those looking for an update or revision.
Others who have attended a session said:
- “Being able just to talk in an easy environment”
- “A fantastic update and revision session”
- “Great to meet others with type 1 diabetes”
- “A practical and fun session”
What next?
Following the session, an appointment with a diabetes specialist nurse will be offered. This will include looking at insulin dose adjustment.
