Importance of Vitamin D
During the spring and summer months (April to September), the majority of people should be able to make all the vitamin D they need from sunlight on their skin. During the autumn and winter, the sun is not strong enough to provide sufficient Vitamin D and it is difficult to get enough vitamin D from food. It is recommended everyone should consider taking a supplement containing 10 micrograms of Vitamin D.
People with darker skin tones, such as from African, African Caribbean or South Asian backgrounds, may not be able to make enough Vitamin D from sunlight and should consider taking a daily supplement of 10 micrograms for the entire year. You can easily find Vitamin D to purchase from pharmacies and larger supermarkets. You can find out more about Vitamin D on the NHS website.
