'As a woman of colour, I have encountered many challenges in the NHS'

My name is Eve and I am the new co-chair of the KCHFT BAME Staff Network. I am a nurse by background but work as the Operational Lead for the Home First team.

To me, EDI is more than a concept. It is a fundamental principle that means everyone, regardless of background, has equal access to opportunities, respect, and support.

My passion for EDI stems from both personal experiences and a commitment to advocating for those whose voices are often unheard.  I have seen first-hand how systemic barriers can affect individuals and communities and I believe in fostering a culture where diversity is not just acknowledged, but valued.

As a woman of colour, I have encountered challenges throughout my NHS career. One experience that stands out while working in A&E.  I was stitching a patient’s head laceration when they expressed reluctance to receive my care because of my colour. In that moment, I had a choice: I could step back, or uphold my professional commitment to patient care. I chose the latter.

While experiences like this can be discouraging, I have always believed that professionalism, kindness, and resilience are the best responses to adversity.

My greatest motivation comes from my children. I want them to grow up in a world where they are judged by their character and abilities, not by their background. I want them to see a future where opportunities are genuinely equal and where diversity is embraced as a strength.

For the BAME Network, I envision a space where people feel empowered to share their experiences, seek support and contribute to positive change. My goal is to strengthen policies, provide mentorship and create an environment where inclusion is embedded in everything we do.
