What do we do?

The Child Health Information Service (CHIS) is responsible for the collection and provision of high quality child health information. CHIS work with other teams in the Kent and Medway NHS organisations, with schools, GP practices and the local authorities, to support the delivery of Health Care Services to children and young adults, aged 0 to 19 years old (inclusive).

Who we are?

The team is responsible for the updating of the national child health record across three departments within the service:

  • new born screening who record screening checks up to the first birthday.
  • pre-school who record checks and immunisations from birth to when the individual starts school
  • school who record checks and immunisations from when the individual starts school to their 20th birthday.

We receive the new births from the hospitals across Kent and Medway and let the health visitors know for their checks to start, record blood spot screening and send result letters to parents, record NIPE (Newborn Infant Physical Examination), new born hearing for those under and up to their first birthday. We also schedule and record immunisations to and from the GP and further development checks up to starting school.

When the child starts school, we provide patient level data to both school nursing and the immunisation service for the scheduling and provision of national child measurement programme including sending of result letters to parents, hearing and vision (where applicable), the childhood flu program, HPV and the TdIPV (School Leaver Booster) and MENACWY to school age individuals.

We also maintain the demographic record of an individual if they move around the Kent and Medway area and also move in or out of the area.

Why talk to us?
