Movement and coordination skills

All children develop their movement and coordination skills at different rates and learn new skills in different ways.

If you would like to know more about how children develop and how you can support them as they grow we have created an online workshop for you to watch.

The aim of the workshop is to help you to better understand your child’s motor coordination development and any challenges that they are experiencing. The workshop will give you information and strategies so that you can support your child’s skill development at home, at school and in the community.

Once you have watched the workshop it is important that you try out strategies and adjustments that can support your child. You will need to keep a record of the ways you have tried to support your child’s coordination development over a period of at least 3 months. This is because it takes time for change to happen and whilst some strategies might have an immediate impact on your child’s abilities to take part in activities and improve their skills, others might take longer.

What next?

For many families the information in the workshop is enough for them to be able to support their child without direct intervention from an occupational therapist or physiotherapist.

If after three months of using different strategies, your child is still having difficulties participating in everyday activities because of their movement and coordination challenges, you can ask to join an online group session with other parents and an occupational therapist or physiotherapist. During this session you will be able to ask any specific questions about your child’s needs and discuss further ways to support them. It is also an opportunity to share and hear ideas from other families.

Remember: You must have tried ideas from the online workshop and kept a record of them and their impact for at least three months before making a request to join the on line question and answer session with a therapist. This information will help the Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist to offer you the most appropriate support and advice during this session.
