Many parents are reluctant to take their child to the dentist because they are worried they will not co-operate. This shouldn’t be a concern and we are here to support you.
One of the main reasons for regular dental visits is for children to become used to visiting the dentist and see it as a normal part of life. Sometimes, this may mean that very little gets done at the appointment, but the dentist can still offer valuable preventative advice and help your child grow more confident about visits.
What can the dentist do?
- An examination, if possible.
- Give you personalised advice on tooth brushing and diet.
- Prescribe high fluoride toothpaste for older children, if necessary.
- Apply fluoride varnish at least twice a year to prevent tooth decay.
- Suggest mouthwashes which may be beneficial.
- Apply fissure sealants (a plastic coating on the back adult teeth, when they come through).
- Liaise with your GP to make sure medication is sugar free.
- Regular dental treatment, if needed, for example pop on crowns (see image below) for baby teeth, regular fillings in adult teeth or extractions.
- Refer you to a hospital specialist or more specialised Community Dental Services, if treatment is needed and it cannot be done at your usual dentist, such as treatment under sedation or general anaesthetic.
Your local dentist is the first point of contact for all dental services. Please ask your child’s school for a referral to our service, if you are unable to access a local dentist.
Please check your child is registered and take them to the dentist at least every six months to maintain a healthy happy smile.
